Christianity and Cosmic Consciousness by Alexis Georg Hoen Book Feature - Win a $25 Amazon Gift Card!

Title: Christianity and Cosmic Consciousness
Author: Alexis Georg Hoen
Publisher: iUniverse
Genre: Religion
Format: Ebook

Born in the Ukraine, educated in Munich, and having practiced medicine in the United States, author Alexis Georg Hoen has been exposed to widely differing political systems and religious beliefs, and he has always maintained an interest as to the origin of these beliefs and their relation to the innermost nature of man. In Christianity and Cosmic Consciousness, he interprets the words and the sacrifice of Jesus as pointing the way toward a realization of our innermost nature—the will to live and love that exists within all.

Sharing his experiences and ideas about Christ’s words and sacrifice, Hoen uses personal anecdotes and biblical examples to illustrate the nature of Christian belief. He provides a host of examples, including key illustrations from the Bible and relevant source material from other writers who address this topic. He shows us that through sacrifice we live in and for others. That is eternal life.

Christianity and Cosmic Consciousness represents the core of Christian teaching without resorting to the supernatural and miraculous, yet doesn’t try to disprove it.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Alexis Georg Hoen attended medical school in Munich. He immigrated to the United States at age twenty-five, and he practiced medicine in Los Angeles for fifty years. In addition to the study of religion, he enjoys gardening and spending time with his three children and six grandchildren.

The Red BookTitle: The Red Book
Author: Andrew Barbour

Genre: Science Fiction
Format: Ebook

This is the culmination of what began on October 6, 2013, at 8:12 a.m. It was to be The Blue Book: The Ultimate Project. In increasing clarity, these books show first the preparation and then the arrival in the first book—which, I freely admit, is not easy to read. But any change that I made, made it nearly impossible to continue until I reversed the change that I had made. It was realised that things had to be effectively translated. This is what led to the creation of The Red Book. So using what I had learned and figured out, I applied the same technique to a digital camera, and the results speak for themselves.

Title: Findependence Day
Author: Jonathan Chevrau
Publisher: Trafford
Pages: 290
Genre: Businesss
Format: Kindle/Hardcover/Paperback

Get rich slowly! Financial independence is a marathon, not a sprint. The financial crisis revealed the hazards of financial illiteracy. Governments desperately want citizens to become financially independent so they’ll be less of a burden on them. Findependence Day presents personal finance in a “can’t put down” story format easily digested by young adults entering the work force and the world of money. Because money problems often cause marital breakups, it focuses on the financial journey of a young couple who experience the usual ups and downs of job loss, buying homes, raising children, investing and pensions, starting businesses, coping with stock market volatility and more.

The secrets of financial independence are critical wherever you are in the financial life cycle:
• Newlyweds embarking on family formation will discover the importance of financial planning.
• Debt-plagued graduates will be motivated to embrace “guerrilla frugality.”
• Home-owners will learn the foundation of financial independence is a paid-for home.
• Those in their first jobs will embrace employer 401(k) plans, traditional IRAs and Roth IRAs.
• New parents will discover the need for life insurance and saving for children’s education.
• Mid-life investors will learn how to cut costs in their portfolios while benefiting from the expertise of financial planners.
• Those near retirement will learn about advanced concepts like annuities and Asset Dedication.

Jonathan Chevreau is the editor of MoneySense magazine, former personal finance columnist for the Financial Post and author of nine financial books, including The Wealthy Boomer: Life After Mutual Funds. He’s active in social media and blogs at www.findependenceday.com.

Breaking the Silence Title: Breaking the Silence
Author: Maria Nieto
Publisher: iUniverse
Pages: 202
Genre: Historical Thriller
Format: Kindle/Paperback

On a sweltering summer day, the streets of Old Madrid that once resonated with the laughter of children playing are empty and silent. But inside the apartment buildings there is life as families faithfully wait for updates about an army uprising in Spanish Morocco. Before long, their greatest fears come true. As rebel troops storm Madrid and chaos fills the streets, six-year-old Mari wonders why she cannot go outside to play. Unfortunately, she has no idea she is about to be trapped inside the abyss of what is rapidly becoming a ruthless civil war.

Already emotionally wounded by the absence of her mother, Mari attempts to go about her fear-filled days living with her father’s family, which includes a grandfather who lovingly teaches her about the history leading up to the conflict. As she embarks on a coming-of-age journey submerged in the darkness of war, Mari somehow stays alive despite the decisions of an intimidating, ruthless dictator, starvation, and brainwashing by the new Fascist regime. But when circumstances lead her to inadvertently commit the ultimate betrayal, Mari must face the horrifying consequences of her actions. Breaking the Silence shares the compelling tale of a little girl’s experiences as she attempts to survive amid the horror and death surrounding the Spanish Civil War.

The author spent her childhood in Spain during the Spanish Civil War and the post war years that followed the war under a brutal dictatorship. As an adult, and after four years in the US Navy, Maria graduated from Temple University in Philadelphia with degrees in nursing and nursing education followed by graduate and post graduate degrees in mental health education and counseling psychology. After teaching psychiatric nursing in Philadelphia, the author moved to New Mexico where she worked in mental health services for the Indian Health Service, and later worked for the University of New Mexico in the department of Emergency Psychiatry. Now they’re calling him a wounded healer; a shamanic Pied Piper for the throngs of alienated youth; a thief of fire. Eight Author Revelations

1. I’ve been recording my dreams in journals for more than 20 years.
I think our dreaming reality is just as valid as our waking. It’s not really in
our nature – more just a cultural habit – for us to make such a big distinction
between the two.

2. I knew that I was an artist by age three, and
understood that it was my destiny to be a writer by the time I was ten or
eleven.

3. Every year I vow that I won’t be putting myself
through the darkness of a Vermont winter ever again – and yet I’m still here.
4. I get out into nature at least three or four times a
week, regardless of the season.

5. As a child, I conceived the idea that the way to pass
through this ‘unsafe’ world unscathed was to be small and not make a ‘splash’.
That belief turned into one of my biggest stumbling blocks along the road to
becoming an author.

6. I often feel like an ancient medicine man who has
somehow stumbled into the modern industrial/computer age and is moving along
generally baffled, trying to make sense of it all.

7. I notice a lot of debate around religion and science:
Which is the most reliable authority with regards to the nature of reality? I
don’t think either one has offered a comprehensive or even particularly helpful
picture, as they stand. I hope that our race can either find ways to expand
these systems of belief or else discover new ones.

8. I used to write fantasy novels, largely because I
needed a place to go to where magic was ‘real’. This need loosened its hold on
me when I realized that magic already surrounds us all. It’s just a matter of
our senses awakening to the presence of it.
Seth Mullins first conceived of his dream to write novels in his early teens, and this one desire has stayed with him throughout all the other myriad twists and turns of life. His inspirations include methods of inner exploration such as dream-work and shamanism and his experiences as a songwriter and performing musician. He studied creative writing at Santa Fe Community College in New Mexico and Lane Community College in Oregon.
Seth has lived in Connecticut, New Mexico, Oregon and (currently) Vermont.

Tug-Of-War by Judith Somborac Book Blast - Win a $25 Amazon Gift Card!

Title: Tug-Of-War
Author: Judith Somborac
Publisher: iUniverse
Pages: 148
Genre: Historical Fiction
Format: Kindle/Paperback

In 1942, in the midst of World War II, three factions struggle for power and control over Serbia: the Royalists, the Partisans, and the Nazis. For those living there, life was put on hold indefinitely while they coped daily with the terrorization of war—an especially disheartening situation for the country’s young people. Fifteen-year-old Miriana, an only child, lives in a small, two-bedroom house in Bela Palanka, Serbia, with her parents, who farm and run a saw and gristmill. Their tiny home now accommodates her mother’s sister and nephew, who have been forced to evacuate from German-occupied Belgrade. Miriana’s aunt is frequently called upon by the Germans to translate for them—a task made more stressful by the fact that the family is also hiding a Partisan soldier in the cellar of the house. Being caught means certain death. Meanwhile, Miriana’s best friend, Stefan, supports his widowed mother and aging grandparents on a nearby farm; he resents having to abandon his aspirations for an education and his passion for the violin to run the farm. Their existence is fraught with the angst of evening curfews, blackout curtains at night, unforeseen air raids, and conflict with the Nazis, but family, friends, and small pleasures propel them through a war that threatens their happiness and their lives on a daily basis.

Defining Intelligence by Dr. Pat Keogh Book Feature - Win a $25 Amazon Gift Card!

Author: Dr. Pat Keogh
Publisher: AuthorHouse

Genre: Education
Format: Ebook/Paperback/Hardcover

It may be unethical for a person to conduct an intelligence assessment on another human being. Human intelligence is unquantifiable. Observing or analysing behaviour, appearance, personality, beliefs or acquired knowledge cannot produce a quantifiable measure of a person’s intelligence. The brain can perform millions of billions of calculations per second. This gives the person enormous power and incalculable potential. Yet, saying ‘I use my brain to think’ awards the ‘I’ (the mind) a priority over the brain. We are thinking beings. We are compelled and condemned to think. Thinking is process. We cannot analyse thinking but we can analyse thoughts and ideas, the products of thinking. The mind can reflect on the past, live in the present and plan for the future. Intelligence involves abstract, purposeful, logical thinking and the ability to create and execute ideas. It also includes unconscious thinking. The mind functions best when the body is at rests. The mind never sleeps. The ‘Bru na Boinne’ megalithic burial tombs in County Meath, particularly New Grange testify to the brilliance in observation, the thoughtful archectual planning and the masterful engineering execution of ideas and plans by our Neolithic ancestors of five thousand years ago. Modern day communication technology air and spacecraft are contemporary testimonials to human genius. Primary education should allow time in the curriculum for students to daydream purposefully. In early schooling greater emphasis should be placed on creativity, music composition, innovation and artistic pursuits.

It was May 2013 when Thomas Paradis convened in Siena, Italy, with a cohort of American faculty and students to lead a two-month inaugural study-abroad program. After a harrowing journey across the ocean, students and faculty alike soon realized that adapting to a foreign culture and language would be more challenging than they expected, especially amid one of the world's more authentic community festivals-the Palio horse race. Paradis weaves witty stories of personal discovery with a crash course on Siena and its ferocious twice-yearly horse race. As the July 2 race and its related rituals draw closer, Paradis details how he and his wife uncovered the impressive local communities that underlie the life and blood of the age-old Palio in order to better understand what drives the passion of its residents. When the race finally begins, Paradis provides a compelling upfront view of the action and the race's aftermath, pulling in the collective experiences of his students as their eyes and minds open to seeing the world in an entirely new way. Living the Palio shares an amusing and instructional romp through Siena, Italy, as university faculty members and their students gain self-confidence, patience, and most importantly, respect for a different way of life.

The global economy often means job changes and relocating. Most of the time, we get married and have children along the way. Many of these changes are great, but others can be quite lonely and tough—divorce, empty nest, health issues, the loss of a parent or spouse are just a few examples. Along the way, how do we hold on to the friends we make—not just the acquaintances, but the deep friendships that help us get through life, both the good times and the bad? We may not be able to keep life from changing, but if we have faith in Christ, we can rely on his promise to supply us with Christian friendships. Are these friendships somehow different? If having a true Christian friend means being one, then how do we do that? This book explores how Christian friendships are different, or at least should be different, and how we can reach out to others in that friendship. We need never be alone, especially when Christ is at the center of our relationships.

John Muir is considered to be the supreme icon of western wilderness and preservation. His counterpart in the east is Harlan P. Kelsey, an often obscure and forgotten figure. In Beautiful Land of the Sky, author Loren M. Wood chronicles Kelsey’s journey from the humblest of beginnings to national prominence in horticulture and the establishment of national parks in the eastern United States. In this biography, Wood tells how, a century ago, Kelsey was the first to pioneer native plants for the American landscape and a leader in that process; how he was a leading participant in bringing all of America to our native plants in their finest original setting; and how he helped make a reality of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, a zenith of horticultural biomass and diversity in America. In addition, this biography explores the parallels in the odysseys of Muir and Kelsey. Though primarily a biography of Kelsey, Wood compares the similarities, differences, and accomplishments of the two men. Including details gathered from more than fifty thousand items in Kelsey’s personal files, Beautiful Land of the Sky narrates the inspiring and entertaining story of how the idea of national parks was implemented east of the Mississippi.
